Dave Abrams, CDIA+, has built an extensive clientele with behavioral health, substance misuse treatment and other organizations by providing software products that enhance organizational processes and reduce operating costs throughout the United States and in the United Kingdom. With an extensive background in office equipment, telecommunications, document management and electronic health records software, Dave has become a consultant to organizations of all sizes.

 

 

Sonita Morin Abrahams is the Executive Director of RISE Life Management Services, formally the Addiction Alert Organization in Kingston, Jamaica. She also lectures on Addiction Studies and EAPs at the University of West Indies, and for the Caribbean Institute on Alcoholism and other Drug Problems (CARIAD) in Trinidad & Tobago. Sonita is a Board member of the National Council on Drug Abuse, and a founding board member and  Caribbean representative for the Drug Prevention Network of the Americas, a U.S. based drug prevention organization. Sonita was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 1993 to attend the Johns Hopkins University as a Hubert Humphrey Fellow, and went on to receive her Master’s degree in Health Science from Hopkins in 1995.

 

 

 

 

Miles Adcox, MS, is the CEO and owner of Onsite Workshops. Onsite is a leader in providing therapeutic intensives, workshops, and consulting services worldwide. Miles is also a partner in Peak Performance Brain Training, Experiential Adventures, and H Financial Services. He co-founded Spirit 2 Spirit a trauma training certification organization and Capella a long term trauma and addiction treatment program. He previously ran a long term, young adult, treatment center for Trauma, mood, addiction, and eating disorders.

 

 

Daniel Alford, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and serves as the medical director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded Massachusetts Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (MASBIRT) program and is the medical director of the BMC Traumatic Stress.

 

 

Caryn Attianese, MA, LPC, NBCC, is the Clinical Director for Rosewood's Inpatient, Residential, Adolescent and Partial programs, and brings passion and expertise to her oversight of day-to-day activities of the clinical team. She spearheads Rosewood's clinical training program and works to give residents the courage and strength to start on the path toward recovery. Caryn holds her master's degree in counseling from Northern Arizona University.

 

Sarah A. Baker, BSBA, has extensive experience as a manger and coordinator of complex projects and as a financial analyst. Most recently, Ms. Baker has been coordinating multiple studies in the area of Addressing Tobacco Through Organizational Change (ATTOC) at the Department of Psychiatry, University of assachusetts Medical School. In this position, Ms. Baker coordinates regional, national, and international studies that focus on assisting institutions to implement treatment, support, and policies for smoking cessation.,

 

Anne Balboni, Psy.D, is the state coordinator/director of the RI CISM TEAM, Inc. She is an International Critical Incident Stress Management Foundation faculty member, Board of Directors member and approved instructor for ICISF classes. She is a member of the RI Disaster Mental Health Task Force and serves as adjunct faculty at CCRI in the EM program. She serves as faculty for Assisting Heroes in Mental Health Foundation Training for Internet Crimes against Children task forces. Dr. Anne is Board Certified, Diplomate, with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress

 
 

Andrea Grubb Barthwell, M.D., F.A.S.A.M., is the President of Two Dreams Outer Banks. President George W. Bush nominated and the U. S. Senate confirmed Dr. Barthwell to serve as Deputy Director for Demand Reduction in the Office of National Drug Control Policy(ONDCP). Dr. Barthwell was a principal advisor in the Executive Office of the President on policies aimed at reducing the demand for illicit drugs. Dr. Barthwell received a BA from Wesleyan University, and an MD the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Barthwell is a past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).

 

 

Jeb Bird, MPsSc., CAC/D, CCDP/D, has treated clients with addiction & mental health  disorders for over 35 years. He completed graduate studies at PA State University, & is a graduate of the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Philadelphia. He is a former faculty member of Alvernia University, where he taught in Addiction & Behavioral Health Sciences. He has presented workshops at state, regional, national, & international conferences. He is a Regional Director for White Deer Run/CFBHS, which is part of CRC Health Group, and also maintains a private therapy practice.

 

 

Gary Blanchard, MA, LADC1, has an MA in Addictions Counseling from Vermont College of Norwich University. Gary is the author of Counseling for Medication Assisted Recovery, Building and Maintaining Recovery, and Success-Centered Addiction Recovery Facilitation. Gary has led many classes and workshops and has presented at national and local  onferences. He is on the board of Directors of MAADAC, the Massachusetts affiliate of the National Association of Addiction Professionals.

 

 

Will Boyce, MEd, HHC, is the founder/current Director of the Mind Body Spirit Program at Mountainside Treatment Center in CT. He has worked in residential treatment for twelve years as counselor/teacher of spirituality, including yoga and qigong. Will is a certified yoga teacher, qigong instructor and experienced meditation teacher. He is also a certified Holistic Health Counselor with the American knowledge and implication of both HIPAA and CRF 42 Part 2 Regulations. She has previously presentenced this topic at the 2010 Cape Cod Symposium and at the 2009 National Guard Annual Substance Abuse Conference.

 

 

Timothy D. Brewerton, MD, DFAPA, FAED, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is triple board certified in general, child/adolescent and forensic psychiatry, Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Eating Disorders. He has edited the book, Clinical Handbook of Eating Disorders: An Integrated Approach. He serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Eating Disorders, Eating Disorders, and Current Food and Nutrition Science.

 

Thomas E. Broffman, PhD, LICSW, LCDP, LCDS, CEAP, is an assistant professor in the BSW program at Eastern CT State University. He has a BSW and a MSW from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. from Boston College, Graduate School of Social Work. He is a Chemical Dependency Consultant at the RI Dept. of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals, Eleanor Slater Hospital in Cranston, RI. He is a regionally known trainer and consultant. He has been a Motivational Interviewing trainer and practitioner for over 16 years.

 

Jerry Brown, PsyD, MFT, has worked in the chemical dependency field for 34 years and in the counseling field for 45 years. He is in private practice Costa Mesa , CA. and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He is the author of Militant Parenting a Survival Guide for Parents With Problem Kids. As a lecturer, therapist, humorist, he has worked and laughed his way though over three decades of changes in the field of chemical dependency, combining laughter at life and it's paradox.

 

Sandy Burke, MA, MEd, MLADC, is currently in private practice and has been employed with public and private substance abuse agencies as well as community mental health agencies providing counseling for co-occurring disordered adults and adolescents which require working knowledge and implication of both HIPAA and CRF 42 Part 2 Regulations. She has previously presentenced this topic at the 2010 Cape Cod Symposium and at the 2009 National Guard Annual Substance Abuse Conference.

 

Ana Cecelia, RN, is the full time dedicated staff position for the Suboxone Clinic at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital. Known for her direct approach as well as attention to detail, she has developed the current clinic from its infancy to a fully operational clinic that now requires an increase in space and personnel.

 

 

Mady Chalk, PhD, MSW, is the Director of the Center for Performance-Based Policy at the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia. Prior to joining TRI, Dr. Chalk was Director of the Division of Services Improvement in the Federal Center for Substance Abuse  reatment (CSAT)/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Before joining the Federal government, Dr. Chalk was Senior Program Officer at the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, after spending 15 years as a faculty member in the Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.

 

 

Diana Clark, JD, MA, recognizing that family members often live in a state of stress and anxiety, authored and facilitates the workshop Family Healing Strategies, and Audio CD What Love Looks Like, for parents of adult children who struggle with addiction. As both a specialist in addiction and family systems, Diana Clark offers an array of services designed to educate, support and guide family members through the process of family recovery.

 

 

Ryan Coffman, MPH, CHES, CTTS-M, is the Director of the Tobacco Consultation Service at UMMC and provides tobacco cessation services at several sites in the UMass system. Ryan acquired his MPH at Tulane University and has several certifications in nicotine  dependence treatment. He first became committed to tobacco control in 2003 while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya. He is interested in enhancing the capacity of other professionals through training. He has also worked and volunteered with numerous at-risk groups from the effects of tobacco.

 

 

Rick Dauer, LADC, is the Clinical Director for River Ridge Treatment Centers. He has been a professional in the field of chemical dependence for twenty-seven years, with extensive experience in residential, outpatient, and corrections-based treatment settings. He has been a peer reviewer for Blue Cross Blue Shield and for the Minnesota Department of Human Services. He has served on numerous committees, panels, and task forces dedicated to improving access to services and quality of care. He is co-author of Helping Men Recover.

 

Raymond P. Daugherty is the President and CEO or Prevention Research Institute and is a dynamic and innovative leader with over 35 years of experience in alcohol and drug abuse prevention. Co-founder of Prevention Research Institute, a leading international, non-profit organization producing research- based curricula that mitigates alcohol- and drug-related issues. He developed a groundbreaking and unique research-based approach to alcohol and drug abuse prevention, with scientific evidence of success. Ray is frequently sought after conference speaker, published author, and contributor to numerous prevention- related books, journals and training materials.  

 

 

Patrick DeChello PhD, LCSW, MSW, RPH is an internationally recognized clinical social worker, clinical psychologist, and chemical dependency treatment specialist with well over 30 years of experience. He is the author of 29 books and numerous articles in the mental health and chemical dependency fields. Dr. DeChello has been on radio, television, featured in numerous publications here and abroad. His books and presentations have a reputation for being clear, humorous, pragmatic and cutting edge.

 

 

Bruce Dechert, MEd, LADC, ICADC, is currently working as the Family Wellness Program Director at Mountainside Treatment Center in CT. He has worked in the field over the last 30 years in adolescent addictions, Outward Bound, intensive outpatient programming, residential treatment centers, and family programs including Sierra Tucson. His passion is to assist the clients and their families in understanding their own and their loved ones perspectives regarding the family illness. He draws his philosophy and practice from the experience of interacting with practitioners and clients.

 

 

Cindy Elms, RD, is a Registered Dietitian with the American Dietetic Association. With a broad background focused on clinical nutrition, her areas of expertise include disordered eating, nutritional counseling and education, nutritional assessments, psychiatric nutritional education, diabetes and enteral feedings. Prior to joining the staff at Rosewood over five years ago, Cindy worked at Remuda Ranch and The Meadows. Cindy earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. She has been working as a Registered Dietitian for over 20 years Rosewood centers for eating disorders.

 

 

Bob Ferguson, BA, is the founder and CEO of Jaywalker Lodge, an extended care addiction treatment program for men, located in Carbondale, Colorado. Before opening Jaywalker Lodge in 2005, Bob served for over 10 years in a variety of recovery services and business development positions at Hazelden Foundation, Crossroads Antigua, and Promises Treatment Centers. Bob is a native New Yorker; he is a graduate of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA; and he lives with his wife and two children in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Bob remains a grateful participant in his own recovery from addiction, which
began on Feb. 12, 1992.

 

 

Catherine Friedman, MD, is a psychiatrist at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island where she specializes in perinatal and perinatal addiction psychiatry. She is an Assistant Professor (Clinical) in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and is board certified in general psychiatry and board eligible in child and adolescent psychiatry and addiction medicine. Her clinical and research interests include dual diagnoses in pregnant and postpartum women, and opioid maintenance therapy.

 

 

Ken Freedman MD, MS, MBA, FACP, FASAM, is the Chief Medical Officer of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston. Previously, he served as Chief of Medicine. Ken serves as Secretary of the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine and the Alternate Regional Director for New England for ASAM. He is Clin. Assoc. Prof. of Medicine at Tufts Univ. Sch. of Medicine and Clin. Assoc. Prof. of Psychiatry at the UMass. Med. Sch. in Worcester. Prior to coming to moving to Boston, Ken was the Medical Director of Ambulatory Care Services at Connecticut Valley Hospital and a Hospitalist at Middlesex Hospital.

 

 

Jeffrey C. Friedman, MHS, LISAC, CCGCF, has for the past eight years, been a primary therapist, gambling counselor and research associate on the adult inpatient unit at Cottonwood. Jeff received his master's degree, summa cum laude, from Lincoln University School of Human Services in 1993. Jeff has been Cottonwood's gambling counselor since December 2003. Articles written by Jeff have appeared in both Counselor Magazine and Addiction Professional. Jeff has been actively involved in his own recovery from chemical dependency for over twenty-four years.

 

 

Gregory K. Gable, PsyD, is a clinical psychologist, licensed in Pennsylvania, is the Executive Director of the Professionals Program at Caron Treatment Centers. He has worked in the addiction field for over 30 years. Dr. Gable served as the director of the Pennsylvania Physicians’ Health Programs for 24 years. Dr. Gable has conducted both quantitative and qualitative research on recovery and relapse factors. He is interested in treatment strategies that help health professionals address barriers to effective utilization of recovery tools.

 

 

Joani Gammill, RN, BR 1, CNDAI, CNDCS, is currently employed in private practice doing alcohol and drug interventions for rehabs around the country. Joani, worked 19 years as a registered nurse in a busy hospital nursery and neonatal intensive care. After her personal struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction she became interested in chemical dependency nursing. She worked seven years as a staff RN at an inpatient rehab. Her career and life took a turn after Dr. Phil McGraw did a televised intervention on her during a prime time special, “Escaping Addiction.”

 

 

David Gastfriend, MD, is involved in research on behalf of Alkermes. At Harvard for 25 years, he founded the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. His pharmacologic and behavioral treatment studies include validating ASAM’s Patient Placement Criteria, and a NIDA Mid-Career Investigator Award for Patient-Oriented Research. In 2007, he received the “Champion in Health Care - Innovator Award” from the Boston Business Journal for work on Vivitrol®. Among his 125 scientific publications, are The ASAM Patient Placement Criteria for Substance-Related Disorders and Addiction Treatment Matching.

 

 

Corinne Gerwe, PhD, LCAS, ICAADC is an internationally recognized expert in the area of trauma and addiction-related disorders. Her work includes the development of an influential new treatment approach, the Gerwe Orchestration Method (G-OM), which addresses the impact and aftermath of early pivotal life-altering experiences in relation to addiction and co-occurring disorders.

 

 

Johnny Graaf graduated from UCT to enter the wild world of advertising it was during this time that he realized he needed recovery. Went to treatment for one year and went to work for his family. It was at this time that he realized that there was a lack of world class facilities in South Africa , he travelled to the very best facilities in the US and brought with him the inspiration to start Montrose, a 18 bed extended care in Cape Town, this rapidly expanded into a Eating Disorders Unit , the Manor and later Cape House in London for transitional care. Johnny also established the Montrose Foundation which seeks to educate, offer therapy, and awareness to disadvantaged people in Africa. It is the only centre of its kind that runs its own registered charity. He is co-owner and founder of Start2stop UK a London based outpatient clinic. Johnny acts as a director of the Montrose Group and Sure Fire Technology.

 

 

Dan Griffin, MA, has worked in the mental health and addictions field for over sixteen years. Griffin is Owner/Lead Consultant at Griffin Recovery Enterprises, Inc. which he started in January 2010. Griffin is the author of A Man’s Way through the Twelve Steps and co-author of Helping Men Recover - both of which are groundbreaking resources in the area of men’s treatment. He was the state drug court coordinator for the Minnesota Judicial Branch from 2002-2010. His master’s degree focused on the social construction of masculinity in the culture of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was trained through Hazelden’s addiction counseling program in 1998.

 

 

Barbara Grimes-Smith, MPH, is the Director of the UMass Psychiatry Wellness Initiative that incorporates wellness activities across the Department and all related clinical sites, to positively impact patient, faculty, staff, and student health. Ms. Grimes-Smith has eighteen years experience engaging community members in a variety of public health interventions, and is using her extensive experience to lead projects that allow for effective implementation of wellness endeavors through careful evaluation of the needs of patients, providers, and staff, and from the perspective of policy changes.

 

 

William Huang, MD, completed his Adult Psychiatry residency and served as Chief Resident of Psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He stayed on and finished his fellowship training in the subspecialty of Addiction Psychiatry. He is board certified in both General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. Huang works as a consulting psychiatrist at Promises Malibu. He also works with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as well as the Southern California Alcohol and Drug Programs. He recently opened a private practice in Santa Monica.

 

 

Jessica Hyde-Christensen, MM, MT-BC, is primary therapist at Rosewood Centers for Eating Disorders. As a board certified music therapist, Jessica has many years of experience with adolescents and adults recovering from trauma, eating disorders and addictions. Jessica combines different types of music, musical instruments and talk therapy to help people express feelings they otherwise struggle to communicate.

 

 

Valerie D. Iyawe, RN, B.A., B.S., M.B.A., coordinates the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) for the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. She has over ten years of experience working with patients with dual diagnoses as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse. She has 26 years of leadership experience as an officer in the US Army Reserve.

 

 

Ron Jacobs, RN, BS, is a staff nurse in the Ambulatory Clinic in the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital. He is known for his empathic approach and ability to engage clients who are labeled as difficult to treat. He works with the chronically mentally ill in the community setting and is employed in the Suboxone Clinic. He has also been instrumental in developing the Suboxone clinic to its current state of growth.

 

 

Greg L. Jones, MD, joined Willingway Hospital as Staff Physician in 2010. Dr. Jones is the former Director of Medical Services at Eastern State Hospital in Lexington, Ky. In 1980, Dr. Jones received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and has been serving the health care community ever since. Dr. Jones first came to Willingway Hospital in 2001 when he participated in an Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. After completing the fellowship program, he stayed on as a staff physician for one year. Dr. Jones then returned to Kentucky where he began the first medical detox unit in Eastern Kentucky at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. From there, Dr. Jones went to Eastern State Hospital as Director of Medical Services which included supervising the lab, radiology and pharmacy services, as well as serving as the Chair of the Infection Control Committee.

 

 

Steven J. Karp, DO, FACN, came to Rosewood from the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania where he served as the Medical Director for seven years. In that capacity, he was responsible for clinical oversight of all mental health programs in the state, providing clinical leadership for the state hospital system as well as the statewide managed behavioral healthcare program. Dr. Karp graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a residency in general psychiatry at Norristown State Hospital in Norristown, PN. He is board certified in Adult Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry.

 

 

Punyamurtula Kishore, MD, MPH, FASAM, has been a practicing public health scientist for over 30 years. He has served as the Associate Medical Director for the Bridgewater Complex of Correctional Institutions as well as for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, was a founding fellow of the Society of Correctional Physicians, and was the last medical director of the Washingtonian Center. Dr. Kishore is the founder and medical director of Preventive Medicine Associates Inc., where he now treats 30+ addicted communities throughout Massachusetts.

 

 

Monika E. Kolodziej, PhD, is a clinical psychologist at the Addiction and Comorbidity Treatment Services at UMass Memorial Healthcare, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and co-chair of the Central Massachusetts Addiction Consortium. As a researcher, clinician, and an active community member, she is committed to implement interventions focused on wellness and smoking cessation for individuals diagnosed with the combination of substance addiction, psychiatric disorders, and chronic medical conditions such as Hepatitis C.

 


 

Alisa Kriegel, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who has worked in New York, California and Arizona for over 20 years. She has extensive experience working with individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality disorder and was trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)in 2001. Along with her clinical work she also provides trainings for staff in various settings on increasing understanding of individuals w/BPD and how to effectively incorporate elements of DBT into treatment.

 


 

Judith Landau, MD, DPM, LMFT, CAI, BRI II, is a child, family and community neuropsychiatrist, who specializes in resilience and overcoming adversity. Co-developer of the Evidence-Based, Best Practice ARISE Continuum of Care, Dr. Landau draws upon 30+ years of research and experience aimed at facilitating long-term healing for addicted individuals and their families. Author of numerous peer-reviewed publications, she has taught in 100+ countries, trained more than 1000 Certified ARISE Interventionists, and consulted to UN, WHO, NIMH, NIDA, NIAAA, SAMHSA, and several international governments. She is recipient of awards for AAMFT’s Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Marriage and Family Therapy and AFTA’s Innovative Contribution to Family Therapy.

 

Jeremy LeBlanc, BA, Outdoor Experiential Education, Level III, is currently working as the Adventure Based Counseling Program Director at Mountainside Treatment Center in CT. He has worked in residential treatment for 10 years, focusing mostly on adolescents with behavioral/emotional disorders and adults in substance abuse treatment. Jeremy hopes to inspire in others a love for the outdoors and provide unique adventure experiences that encourage self-awareness and personal growth.


 

Joshua Lee, MD, is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the New York University School of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, where he has led studies in the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence in both the primary care and criminal justice settings. Dr. Lee graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, completed Residency Training at NYU before completing a Clinical Fellowship at Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Lee is the author of multiple publications on the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence.


 

Dan Lynch is a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS), Board Registered Interventionist (BRI-1), and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC-1), Dan is a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS), South Shore Coalition of Independent Therapists, American Academy of Health Care Providers in Addictive Disorders, and The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services.


 

Robert Lynn, EdD, is an internationally recognized lecturer, researcher, and clinician in the field of Counseling Psychology and Drug Dependency. During the past 40 years he has held leading positions in many clinical settings, levels of addiction treatment, Employee Assistance Programs, State Government, and as a professor in several universities. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Senior Fellow in Biofeedback Practice, and also a recognized expert in Family Therapy and Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Lynn, although known for his many contributions to the Treatment Community, may be best known for his development of methods for client centered care coordinated treatment systems focused on outcome data in the United States, Europe and the Middle East.


 

Kendra Marien, MSW, LICSW, CCDP-D, has a B.A. in Art Therapy from Emmanuel College and an M.S.W. from Salem State College. She is licensed as an Independent Clinical Social Worker and is certified in treating co-occurring disorders. Ms. Marien is also a Senior Instructor for the Next Step Program at Worcester State University and an adjunct faculty member for the Addiction Counselor Education Program at UMass-Boston.


 

Douglas McLellan, RN, M.Ed., coordinates the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) for the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Before coming to the Board he worked 30 years for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health where much of his focus was on patients with dual diagnoses.


 

Bill McNiff, 76, was born, raised and educated in New York City. In 1977 he started his own, marketing company and for the next 12 years traveled throughout the world representing US firms to foreign markets and foreign firms to US opportunities. When a serious illness prohibited extensive travel he closed his business in 1988 he studied Drug and Alcohol Counseling at Villanova University. Upon completion of his studies he went to work for the Clare Center, in York County, Pennsylvania as a drug and alcohol counselor. It was during his work there that he discovered that few of their clients and staff knew the genesis of Alcoholics Anonymous and the development of their Twelve Step Program of Recovery.


 

Don Meichenbaum, PhD, is presently Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention , Miami (www.melissainstitute.org). He is one of the founders of Cognitive behavior therapy .In a survey of clinicians, he was voted “one of the 10 most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century”. He has consulted and lectured internationally. His presentations are noted for their combination of scholarship, critical-mindedness, clinical perspicacity and practicality and humor.


 

Michael Miller, MD, FASAM, FAPA, is the medical director of the Herrington Recovery Center at Rogers Memorial Hospital and is an internationally recognized authority in the field of addiction medicine.


 

Susan Moitozo, MEd, LADC 1, holds a Masters degree in Education from Boston University and is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Ms. Moitozo utilizes her 26 years of experience in the human service field toward the goals of ensuring the highest quality of Clinical Services throughout Spectrum Health Systems continuum of care. Her expertise in program design, gender responsive and trauma informed care and organizational leadership are devoted to helping staff at all levels of organization.


 

James C. “Jes” Montgomery, MD, was the Medical Director at Santé Center for Healing from 2003 until recently and private practice of general Psychiatry in Dallas-Fort Worth. Certified by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Diplomate of the Board of Addiction Medicine. Awards include the Carnes Award for Work in the Field of Sexual Addiction and President’s Award by NALGAP. Prior to psychiatry, he practiced Family Medicine /Addiction Medicine. Presentations/Publications include topics of addictions, ethics, trauma, sexuality and spirituality, grief and many recovery related topics


 

Paula Morrissette, PsyD, LMHC,LADC-1, completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2006. She has worked in the field of addiction treatment since 1984, and is presently a Psychologist at AdCare Hospital in Worcester, MA. Her specialty areas are addictions and dual diagnosis. She is a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Clinician and Mental Health Counselor. Dr. Morrissette teaches at Westfield State University and Becker College in Worcester, She has presented on a variety of addictions and recovery related topics throughout the state.


 

Andrew J. Moynihan, PhD, LADC-1, LRC, CADAC, has been in the substance abuse treatment field since 1985 as a counselor at a detoxification center, 28-day programs, residential programs, shelter programs, forensic programs, senior counselor, program director, executive vice president, and clinical director. In addition to serving in all those positions and settings he has developed substance abuse treatment programming for many of those same settings.


 

Patrice M. Muchowski, ScD, is the Vice President of Clinical Services at AdCare Hospital, and the President of AdCare Educational Institute. Dr. Muchowski is a licensed psychologist in the state of Massachusetts, and is a Massachusetts and Nationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She also has a Certificate of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders from the American Psychological Association. Dr. Muchowski has conducted numerous addiction trainings and workshops both locally and nationally.


 

Libby, Neal, MA, LPC is Director of Clinical Program Development at Rosewood Center for Eating Disorders. She earned her Master’s Degree in Transpersonal Psychology, with a specialization in Art Therapy from Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado. Psychodynamically trained, Libby combines art therapy with evidence based practices of EMDR and DBT. Her presentations on eating disorders include NEDA, University of Denver, Naropa University, and the Reel Recovery Film Festival. Libby was also Clinical consultant for the documentary film, Beauty Mark. She is amember of IAEDP, Arizona Art Therapy Association, American Art Therapy Assocation & a LPC in Colorado.


 

John Newport, PhD, CEAP, is a leading authority on the role of wellness lifestyles in recovery from substance abuse disorders. He is author of “The Wellness-Recovery Connection” (Health Communications), is a featured columnist for Counselor Magazine and has authored over 200 articles on wellness, addictions and health care issues. He has also published two workbooks on wellness and recovery in collaboration with Gorski/CENAPS and serves on a CSAT panel charged with developing Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) on Health, Wellness and Extended Recovery.

Nuckols, PhD, is described as “one of the most influential clinical and spiritual trainers in North America.” Dr. Nuckols’ passion and mission is to assist in the integration of emerging scientific research with traditional spiritual and self-help knowledge. Dr. Nuckols is widely published, having authored more than 60 journal articles, 30 books and workbooks, 50 DVDs, CDs and videos, and 25 audiotape series. David M. Ockert, PhD, is president of Parallax Center, an outpatient detoxification and chemical dependency treatment center located in New York City. Last year, there were 16,500 visits to Parallax Center by patients addicted to alcohol, opiates, stimulants and other drugs. The treatment approach at the Parallax Center combines psychosocial, cognitive and behavioral therapies to treat not only chemical dependency but also any psychiatric or medical problems. Dr. Ockert has collaborated with Dr. Allen Zweben on a clinical trial for a new medication for alcohol-dependence treatment.


 

Stancel Riley, MD, received his degree from Univ of Alabama School of Medicine and is board certified in surgery & thoracic surg. He practiced as a cardiothoracic surgeon 22 years. He received a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and a Master of Public Administration from the JFK School of Government. In 2006, Dr. Riley joined the Mass Board of Registration and is now Executive Director. He is a faculty member of Emerson College, Lecturer at Harvard Medical School & Mass General Hospital, and research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health.


 

David Ring, MEd, coordinates the Massachusetts Professional Recovery System (MPRS) for Division of Health Professions Licensure. He also serves as an adjunct professor in counseling with Lesley University and is a trainer with the Greater Boston Domestic Violence Volunteer Collaborative.


 

David Rotenberg, MA , MBA, LPC, CAC Diplomate, CCDP Diplomate, has worked in the chemical dependency treatment field for two decades, the last fifteen years with adolescents, young adults, and their families. He remarks on the increase in self injurious behaviors both prior to treatment and while engaged in treatment. He addresses the CD industry’s understanding and response to cutting and other SIBs in the primary CD setting. No longer the domain of psychology, psychiatry and psychiatric facilities, SIB treatment and engagement must be integrated into treatment plan goals and objectives within the primary drug and alcohol setting.


 

Luis T. Sanchez, MD, received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed a general medical internship and psychiatric residency at the Cambridge Hospital. He is the Director of Physician Health Services (PHS), a corporation of the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Sanchez was President of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs from 2005-2009 and is currently serving office as Past President on the board of directors. Dr. Sanchez is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has Added Qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry.


 

Greg Seward, MSHCA, LADC-I, CTTS-M, CADC, CAS, LSW, is the Director of the Tobacco-Free Initiative oversees development and implementation of the tobacco policies and environment, staff, and patient supports for UMass. He has lectured on organizational change and tobacco treatment in consulting in the USA and Canada, for hospitals, schools, veteran’s hospitals, retreats, women’s conferences and departments of public health, etc His passion is in service to organizations, staff and patients with serious mental illness and substance abuse disorders. His photography has been exhibited in UMass Medical School. He enjoys Polar Dips on New Year’s Day.


 

Gerald Shulman is a clinical psychologist, Master Addiction Counselor and Fellow of the American College of Addiction Treatment Administrators. He has been providing treatment or clinically or administratively supervising the delivery of care to alcoholics and drug addicts full time since 1962. He provides training and consulting in behavioral health, with an emphasis on the ASAM PPC-2R, of which he is an author, providing quality treatment in a managed care environment, moving to evidenced-based treatment and older adults with substance use disorders. He was an author of the ASAM Supplement on Pharmacotherapy and Workgroup Facilitators for two CSAT TIPs.


 

Ronald Smith, MD, PhD, specializes in addiction and trauma, is the former Chairman of the Dept. of Psychiatry at the National Naval Medical Center, and consultant to Congress. He is board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Board of Emergency Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and International Doctors in AA. He holds a BS from the US Naval Academy, an MD from the University of Texas, and PhD from Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute.


 

Johan Sorensen, BA (Hons), was clinical director for the Nour al Shorouk Centers in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Before that, he was director/founder/clinical director/marketing director of some of the best known residential facilities in the UK, including Life Works and Priory Farm Place. He now provides consultancy services and interventions in Europe, the USA, Africa and the Middle East. He travels and networks internationally in a quest to find the newest and most effective approaches for any given population. His passion is the provision of comprehensive and top quality care using innovative and client centered approaches. He is passionate about assisting in building Behavioral health care infrastructure in developing countries.

 

 

Jacquelyn Starer, MD, FACOG, FASAM, is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and serves as the ASAM Chair of the Women and Substance Use Disorders Work Group. She is an Associate Physician at the Addiction Recovery program at the Faulkner Hospital and the Coordinator of the Division of Opioid Dependent Pregnant Women at Community Substance Abuse Centers in Chelsea, MA. She serves on the Massachusetts DPH Maternal Mortality Committee and the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Maternal and Perinatal Welfare.

 

 

Reinhard Straub, LICSW, LCDCS, has worked in the Substance Abuse field since 1989 and recently founded Clinical Services of Rhode Island with George Southiere, MD. Reinhard has developed numerous substance abuse programs, taught at SUNY Empire State College, and has conducted countless interventions for the impaired physician program in NY and as a private practitioner. Reinhard plays a mean electric violin & has performed & recorded with many well known artists, and is a working artist and gallery owner.


 

Faye S Taxman, PhD, is a University Professor in the Criminology, Law and Society Department and Director of the Center for Advancing Correctional Excellence at George Mason University. Dr. Taxman is recognized for her work in the development of the seamless systems of care models that link the criminal justice with other service delivery systems. She has had numerous grants from the NIDA, National Institute of Justice, & other funding agencies. She has active “laboratories” with her nearly 20 year agreement with the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

 

Hunter Taylor, MS, LMLP, LCP is the clinical lead therapist at Rosewood Ranch, the main campus of Rosewood Centers for Eating Disorders. Hunter brings over 30 years of mental health experience and expertise in management, addictions, and psycho-education to Rosewood. Hunter regularly conducts training and workshops for ONSITE in Tennessee in psychodrama. Hunter holds Masters of Science degree in Counseling Psychology from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

 

Mishka Terplan MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor at in both the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences as well as the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland. He is Medical Director of the Maryland Women’s Center at Western Penn. His research focuses on trends in drug and alcohol in pregnancy.

 

Kenneth Thompson, MD, has worked 23 years in the field of addiction. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He help start the University of Florida’s first Addiction Treatment Center, the Florida Recovery Center. He has special interest in treatment of healthcare professionals, chronic pain and addiction, and spirituality.

 

Marcia Van Vleet, MD, MPH, is the Director of the Newborn Nursery, Dr. Marcia Van Vleet is concentrating her efforts on improving the care that newborns receive at Women & Infants’ Hospital. This includes expanding the evidence-based literature and bringing best practices to current policies. Dr. Van Vleet’s research interests are medical education, breastfeeding, neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), survey methodology, and public health. Her thesis for an MPH from Brown University investigated the hybrid chart documentation in maternal and newborn charts.

 

Alan A. Wartenberg, MD, is the Associate Medical Director of the Providence DVA Hospital Opioid Treatment Program, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Addiction Medicine by ASAM.

 

Brenda Westberry, MS, is a retired Chief Adult Probation Officer for the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch. She has over 21 years experience in the field of Criminal Justice working with substance abuse treatment agencies, and key community organizations while servicing diverse criminal justice populations. During a statewide initiative, Brenda was responsible for providing Motivational Interviewing training to 420 Adult Probation Officers in the State of Connecticut. Brenda is an adjunct professor in the Sociology Social Work and Applied Sciences Department at Eastern Connecticut State University as well as an adjunct professor at Mitchell College in the Criminal Justice Department.

 

Geoff Wilson, LCSW, CADC, is a licensed clinical social worker and certified alcohol and drug counselor. He has been practicing in the substance abuse and mental health treatment fields for over 16 years. He has treated adolescents experiencing co-occurring disorders in a variety of treatment settings, including inpatient hospitalization, long-term residential, and intensive outpatient treatment. He is currently employed with The Ridge Behavioral Health System, a 110 bed psychiatric and chemical dependency hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. He has served as the President of the Kentucky Adolescent Substance Abuse Consortium for 10 years and was appointed by the Governor of Kentucky to the Kentucky Board of Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors in 2008.

 

Stephen Wyatt, DO, graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1979. Upon completion of his psychiatric residency he became a NIDA Clinical Research Fellow in the Dept. of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. While at Yale he completed an Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. His primary interest and research has been dual diagnosis treatment, working with HIV positive patients and adolescents. Dr. Wyatt is in active clinical practice with the conviction that this underserved population of chronically ill patients have for too long been neglected and inappropriately treated in the health care system.

 

Douglas M. Ziedonis, MD, MPH, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center. He is an internationally recognized leader in co-occurring mental illness and addiction, and founder of the Addressing Tobacco through Organizational Change (ATTOC) model. Dr. Ziedonis was an advisor to President Bush’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, and serves on a variety of advisory groups / study sections for SAMHSA, NIDA, NIMH, VA Health Care, American Psychiatric Association, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

 

Dawn Zurlinden, MSSW, LCSW, has extensive experience specializing in issues such as trauma, addictions, and loss of spirituality. She holds a position as Clinical Specialist at The Ranch, in Tennessee. She has worked with that residential population for ten years, as well as privately. She conducts therapeutic workshops nationally and internationally. She integrates the latest in trauma resolution techniques with experiential, expressive, and conventional therapy. She incorporates her extensive studies in Eastern and Western spirituality.
